The Secretary-General of the United Nations highlighted Spain's leadership on issues of peace and security, the fight against poverty and the protection of human rights, as well as its collaboration with the United Nations in other areas. He also underlined the success of the Open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Women, Peace and Security, which was chaired by the President of the Spanish Government on 13 October in New York with a record number of 113 delegations taking part.
During the meeting, the President of the Government and the Secretary-General of the United Nations also tackled various issues of international current affairs, such as the situation in Syria and Libya and the migratory and refugee crises currently being experienced in Europe. They also reviewed the existing perspectives on climate change in light of the meeting of the members of the United Nations Convention on this issue, which will commence in Paris on 30 November.
