In accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 40/2022, of January 12, amending RD 634/2021, of July 26, which restructures the Presidency of the Government, the Communication Offices of the diplomatic missions of Spain will report directly to the State Secretariat for Communication in the terms regulated by Act 2/2014, of March 25, on the Action and the Foreign Service of the State.

The Communications Offices are therefore a network of the State Foreign Service whose direction and coordination is the responsibility of the State Secretariat for Communication through its Department of International Information. The directors of these offices are State officials with diplomatic status and the rank of counsellor.

The Offices are an instrument of support, in the field of information and image creation, for the action of the State in its foreign policy. Among their functions are the following:

  • To promote and disseminate information about Spain abroad and, in particular, about the activities and announcements of the Government and its President.
  • To inform the Government of Spain about international news of interest to our country, by sending information and analysis of what is published by the media.
  • To support the State Secretariat for Communication in the organization of news coverage of State visits and official visits by His Majesty the King, the President of the Government, members of the Government and other State authorities.
  • To provide assistance and support to Spanish correspondents and Spanish media companies. The Communication Offices manage the accreditation of special envoys of the Spanish press with local authorities; they process the obtaining of permits - under a temporary import regime - for the work material of graphic and radio journalists and, in general, do everything necessary to facilitate the work of the Spanish press abroad. They also provide credentials to journalists to attend official events.
  • To support the State Secretariat for Communicatio in the process of accreditation in Spain of correspondents, collaborators and special envoys from the country in which the Office is located.
  • To maintain and promote relations with the media in the country in which the Office is located.
  • To provide support for the organisation of events of the diplomatic mission in which the media participate, helping to enhance the media coverage of the most positive aspects of the bilateral relationship with the host country.

There are currently 22 Communication Offices abroad.
