The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, took part by videoconference in a meeting of leaders convened by the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, and the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, with the aim of tackling the climate crisis and accelerating the just transition. He was accompanied by the Third Vice-President, Sara Aagesen.

Pedro Sánchez underlined that the seriousness of the current situation calls for decisive, responsible action based on science, recalling the consequences of the DANA that hit Valencia last October and stressing that the only way to tackle climate change is to act in a united way, with more multilateralism. During his speech, he also said that COP30 will be key to meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement with ambitious national contributions so as not to exceed the 1.5ºC target, referring to the Belém meeting as an opportunity to make progress on the commitments to progressively abandon fossil fuels and boost climate financing.

The President also pointed out that the ecological and just transition is not only essential to protect the planet, but also represents an economic opportunity. In this regard, he recalled that Spain's leadership in economic growth is in part due to its commitment to the climate agenda, the deployment of renewable energies and the energy transition.

Last, the President of the Government stressed that for COP30 to be a success, it will be essential to reach an ambitious agreement at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, which will take place this year in Seville.
