The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, this morning received the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, in what was the first visit by an Iraqi Prime Minister to Spain.
The visit highlights the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Iraq, as well as the firm commitment of both countries to deepen a relationship based on mutual respect and shared benefit. In this context, a Joint Declaration, which addresses the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries and a framework for cooperation to address regional and multilateral challenges, was adopted.
Two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on financial cooperation and Justice were also signed to boost cooperation at ministerial level. In addition, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and the CEOE have signed MOUs with their Iraqi counterparts in the field of industrial and business cooperation.
The Prime Minister stressed that Spain is committed to the reconstruction and modernisation of Iraq through the expansion of bilateral trade and investment, which are in full swing, and which offer opportunities for Spanish companies in sectors such as defence, infrastructure, transport, agri-food and water management. In addition, the two leaders discussed the promotion of cooperation in the fields of tourism and culture.

The President of the Government conveyed to the Iraqi Prime Minister Spain's commitment and support for the efforts of the Iraqi Government to maintain its stability, security and sovereignty, making reference to Spain's support for the NATO mission in the country.
Pedro Sánchez and Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani discussed the situation in the Middle East, sharing their concern about the escalation of violence and the risk it poses to the whole region. In this regard, they called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, to stop the violence immediately and to fully respect international law, including international humanitarian law, which is reflected in the Joint Declaration adopted.
They also reiterated their strong support for the UN and underlined their commitment to a rules-based international order. The two leaders also called for the full and effective implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.
