In Bucharest, Pedro Sánchez stresses the need for the European Union to maintain its green and social footprint in the coming years

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, with whom he reviewed the different issues on the common agenda of both countries and the priorities for the next cycle of the European Union.

Pedro Sánchez and Marcel Ciolacu shared their commitment to the ecological transition and the consolidation of the social pillar, and agreed that the EU should have a green and social footprint during this next cycle.

Both leaders highlighted the good state of relations between Romania and Spain, friends and allies, as highlighted by the First Spanish-Romanian Summit held in Castellón in 2022,, which has allowed the relationship to intensify. They also called for further strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In this regard, President Sánchez and Prime Minister Ciolacu agreed that Spain and Romania are two of the fastest growing and most progressive Member States at the moment, and stressed that both countries are united by their commitment to the welfare of workers, defending Ukraine and a reindustrialisation of the EU that benefits everyone.

Pedro Sánchez also highlighted the growing interest among Spanish companies in the Romanian economy, in sectors such as renewable energies, infrastructure, housing and construction.

Finally, they reviewed the international situation, with particular attention to the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. In this regard, the president of the Government of Spain underlined Spain's commitment to defending NATO's eastern flank, as highlighted by the deployment of Spanish troops in Romania, who participate in the air police.
