The President of the Government attends the tribute to the former President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has attended the tribute to the late former President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors.

European leaders paid tribute to one of the great architects of European integration, who managed to advance the EU project with achievements that form part of his legacy, such as the single market, the Maastricht Treaty, economic and monetary union and the Erasmus programme.

The Government of Spain and the Government of Portugal have jointly decided to declare official mourning on 31 January for the death of Jacques Delors to remember his unwavering commitment to the construction of a united, open and modern Europe, and to highlight the essential role that Jacques Delors played in the accession of Spain and Portugal to the EU in 1986.
