At the meeting, the Council gave the green light to the procedure for drawing up the new National Security Strategy. As established in Law 36/2015 of 28 September 2015 on National Security, the President of the Government is responsible for proposing its drafting and revisions every five years, or alternatively when the circumstances of the strategic environment make it advisable to do so. In addition to the legally established deadlines, the agreement adopted today by the National Security Council identifies the significant change in the international landscape since 2021 as the main reason for initiating the strategic review process.
