Moncloa Palace, Madrid

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, held a meeting at the Moncloa Palace with the President and CEO of IMEC, Luc Van den Hove, to discuss the project to create a world-leading semiconductor research centre in Malaga and the promotion of public-private partnership.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the director of the Office of Economic Affairs and G20, Manuel de la Rocha, and IMEC's executive vice president, Max Mirgoli, the CEO of this world leader in nanoelectronics research and development and digital innovation thanked the Prime Minister for his continued support for the project and the close cooperation between the Spanish and Belgian governments, which is a boost for greater pan-European cooperation in semiconductors.

Van den Hove also conveyed to Pedro Sánchez IMEC's firm commitment to Spain and its interest in integrating into the Spanish scientific and semiconductor ecosystem in order to build a strong European R&D collaboration. The meeting also addressed the European Union's strategic agenda for the coming years in the semiconductor sector.

IMEC signed a collaboration agreement with the Government of Spain in July 2023 for the creation of a research centre in Malaga in specialised technologies for the manufacture of advanced chips. The future centre, the first of its kind outside Belgium, will boost the microelectronics ecosystem through an innovative public-private partnership in this field.

The new facility will aim to develop new 300 mm chip prototyping processes and will enable the discovery of new chips and new applications in fields such as health, biology, photonics, augmented and virtual reality and precision engineering.
