The President of the Government of Spain receives the new International Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council

The Council, which has just been set up by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, brings together 10 leading international experts in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation to advise on the key aspects of the development of this technology, trends, challenges and opportunities.

Specifically, the Council is made up of the president, former minister Manuel Castells; honorary professor at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose in London and former president of the Italian National Innovation Fund, Francesca Bria; senior researcher at Microsoft Research and USC Annenberg Research Professor, Kate Crawford; emeritus professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Jerome A. Feldman; technology policy expert and global manager at Google, Nicklas Lundblad; executive director of the independent think tank Reimagining Europe, Erika Staël Von Holstein; and associate professor at Oxford University's Institute for Ethics in AI, Carissa Véliz.

The president of the Government of Spain discussed Spain's strategic priorities in Artificial Intelligence with the Council, plus the role out of this technology and the importance of preserving democratic values. Views were also exchanged on the role of the public sector in the development and role out of AI, analysing possible new forms of public-private partnerships or the impact of AI on political polarisation and risks for liberal democracies, as well as the protection of rights and privacy or potential risks. Our country has great capabilities and scientific talent in this field, as well as an emerging business fabric, with digital connectivity infrastructures and first-class data centres to take advantage of the opportunities.

Spain, a world leader in Artificial Intelligence

The Government of Spain is promoting the development of ethical Artificial Intelligence internationally, oriented towards citizens' rights. In fact, Spain is an international benchmark in this area after having promoted an ethical regulation and innovative initiatives such as the creation of the first Spanish Agency for the oversight of Artificial Intelligence at a European level during the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union.
