The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has taken part in the high-level meeting convened by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in Warsaw. The meeting forms part of the second round of contacts between leaders to discuss the Strategic Agenda 2024-2029, a document setting out the EU's policy priorities for the next legislative cycle. The leaders of Estonia, Poland, Finland, Greece and Ireland also attended.
The European partners have discussed a major document which sets out policy guidelines for the next five years and is due to be approved at the June European Council. In this sense, President Sánchez has conveyed Spain's priorities and the ideas that should be further developed in the text, defending a broader vision, with a greater long-term prospective approach that places special emphasis on social policies, ecological transition, gender equality and the fight against child poverty and inequality. In other words, putting the welfare of European citizens at the centre.

All this, without neglecting the issues of European security and defence, the need for a common industrial policy and the protection and deepening of the internal market, which represent an opportunity to strengthen the EU's economic growth, competitiveness and strategic autonomy.
The great global challenges transcend Europe's borders, the president argued, and the EU must have the necessary tools to tackle them. The next five years must be about securing Europe's freedom and leadership, driving a new era of sustainability and global prosperity.
The future Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 began to be shaped at the Granada Summit, under the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU, whose Declaration contains the basic elements to be addressed.
