Sánchez and Grynspan, coordinator of the UN Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance, have discussed how to combat food insecurity and food shortages caused by Putin's war in Ukraine.
A total of 276 million people worldwide are currently severely food insecure, a figure that could rise to 323 million by the end of 2022. Russia and Ukraine together account for 28% of world wheat exports and 15% of maize, and Ukraine produces half of the world's sunflower oil.
The President of the Government of Spain, aware that the food crisis is a global problem that must be tackled through multilateralism, has invited Grynspan to take part in the Summit on Food Security, which he will chair on 20 September in the margins of the UN General Assembly, together with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel; the President of Senegal, Macky Sall; and the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
