Mariano Rajoy was received at the air base by the Minister for Defence, Pedro Morenés, who from Gando, coordinated the operation to rescue the bodies of the three servicemen. The President of the Government conveyed his support and condolences to the families of Captain José Morales Rodríguez, Lieutenant Saúl Fernando López Quesada and Sergeant Johnander Ojeda Alemán.
The President of the Government thanked the military personnel who provide their services at the base in Gando for their work, their efforts and their dedication. "I told them that they have behind them the support of not only the Government of Spain, but also of the vast majority of the Spanish people, who highly value their work". Mariano Rajoy reiterated the recognition of both the government and the people of Spain" of the Spanish Armed Forces, and specifically of the air force, the navy and the divers who continue working in truly complicated circumstances where the helicopter sank".
Moreover, the President of the Government highlighted the aid provided by Morocco in the rescue operation. "That was conveyed to me by the general who headed up the operations and also many of the servicemen who have taken part in recent days in the search and rescue operation. They felt supported", stressed Mariano Rajoy.
According to the President of the Government, they are working at this time to bring up the last remaining body of the deceased- on Friday they were able to bring up the bodies of the other two members of the armed forces who perished in the accident.
Area affected by storms
Mariano Rajoy also visited the town of Telde on Gran Canaria, one of the municipalities in which the public infrastructure and private properties suffered the most serious damage in the storm that affected the Canary Islands. The President of the Government said that action will be taken as swiftly as possible and recalled that on Friday the Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree-Law allocating aid to repair the damage caused by the heavy rainfall in the Canary Islands.
