Moncloa Palace, Madrid

Mariano Rajoy and John Kerry welcomed the political agreement reached between the two countries on the clean up and restoration of the environment in the Almerian town of Palomares, affected 50 years ago by an accident between two aircraft of the US Air Force which caused radioactive contamination to the land in the town, and which also provides for the deposit of the contaminated soil in a suitable site in the United States.

They also reviewed bilateral relations and tackled issues of a regional and international nature of special interest, particularly the situation in Syria, in Libya and the Middle East Peace Process. They both expressed their concern at the deterioration of security conditions in the region and the expansion of Jihadi terrorism, which is causing a great humanitarian crisis.

John Kerry was received on Sunday by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo, and also held a meeting on Monday morning with H.M. King Felipe VI at Zarzuela Palace.
