In his role as Executive President of the Board of Trustees, Mariano Rajoy received the King and Queen upon their arrival at El Pardo Palace, accompanied by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García Margallo, and for Education, Culture and Sport, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, and the Director of the Cervantes Institute, Víctor García de la Concha.
During the meeting, the Board of Trustees evaluated the situation of the Spanish language around the world and the activity of the Cervantes Institute in the protection and promotion of this language shared by more than 500 million people in more than 20 countries covering all continents, highlighted the King in a later speech to the trustees of the Institute and Ibero-American ambassadors accredited in Spain.
The Cervantes Institute is a public institution set up by Spain in 1991 to promote and teach the Spanish languages and co-official languages, and to spread Spanish and Hispano-American culture. H.M. the King is the Honorary President, while the President of the Government exercises the post of Executive President.
