Frigate "Álvaro de Bazán", Djibouti
Admiral, commander, officers, non-commissioned officers and sailors of the frigate "Álvaro de Bazán", members of the international Chief of Staff on board, dear friends,
The reason for my presence here today is simple, I wanted to spend a few hours with you in the days leading up to this festive period, that is undoubtedly a time to be with ones family, to bring you the sincere congratulations of His Majesty the King, of the government I head up and of all the people of Spain.
I also bring you a message of acknowledgment and empathy, of support and encouragement in these days which we tend to spend with our families, but which you will spend far from your country, in the service of Spain in the Indian Ocean.
Our participation in this operation, which we took over the command of on 6 December, is a response to the protection of our national interests and our commitment to the international community. Admiral, congratulations.
The scenario in these waters has changed greatly over the last few years. I will give just one example: in 2009, there were 163 attacks by gangs of pirates who managed to take control of 46 vessels; in the year to date, these figures have been significantly reduced to 13 attacks and no vessel captured. Spain - and its commitment in operations such as "Atalanta" and "Ocean Shield" - has played an important role in this success.
The international community is winning the battle for maritime security and fishing activity in one of the most dangerous seas in the world. You are part of that, but you mustn't drop your guard now. The threat has not been wiped out and still exists. We mustn't be complacent. You must maintain the same demanding level as you have maintained over these last few years.
I will finish now and would like to do so by expressing the pride I feel, as President of the Government, at this success; a success that is rather a reflection of your dedication and hard work, of your commitment and efforts.
On a closing note, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2014, and I would like you to join me and the Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish Navy in saying, Long Live the King! Viva España!
Thank you very much.
