The Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo, participated in the ministerial round table "National mechanisms for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls: Recommit, resource and accelerate implementation Beijing", held in the framework of the 69th CSW, the Commission on the Status of Women, which is taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Ana Redondo pointed out that "we live in a scenario of growing insecurity, uncertainty, setbacks and accumulated crises, which generates increasing distrust in democracy." The minister also expressed the Government of Spain's dismay and solidarity with the 612 million women and girls who live in close proximity to armed conflicts.

During the ministerial roundtable, Redondo highlighted Spain's leadership in feminist policies and the Government's strong commitment "to advance in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals" and to this end she assured that it is essential to "generate a powerful regulatory framework that protects and provides rights to all women."

In this regard, Redondo highlighted the State Pact against Sex-based Violence, the Parity Law and the Co-responsibilities Plan as advances in achieving real and effective equality and closing gender gaps.

Spain also used this forum to defend its commitment to the defence of women's rights, freedom and security. "Public equality policies are the instrument for improving not only the lives of women, but of all citizens, because when women advance, society advances and democracy advances," concluded the minister.

EU Ministerial Meeting

The minister also took part in the European Union ministerial breakfast, focusing on the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform, where she defended the progress made by Spain in terms of equality. Ana Redondo recalled that in 50 years the country has gone from a dictatorship to occupying fourth place in the European Equality Index. There, the minister defended the commitment of Pedro Sánchez's Government to equality, but insisted that it is necessary to "consolidate progress at a global level."

Spain has made an urgent appeal to the European Union to build a strong Feminist Alliance in the face of "a worrying global backlash that threatens to undermine decades of progress."

Side events

Throughout the week, the agenda includes various meetings, bilateral meetings and side events. Ana Redondo will participate this afternoon (local time) in the meeting "Dialogues to form an International Feminist Alliance" organised by the Ministry of Equality and to be held at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in New York.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the minister will participate in the event "Digital sex-based violence: towards transformative policies and alliances in the framework of Beijing+30", co-organised by the Ministry of Equality, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) and the Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women (IIPEVCM).

For her part, the Secretary of State for Equality and the Eradication of Violence against Women, Aina Calvo, held a bilateral meeting with Australia, while the Director of the Women's Institute held a meeting with her counterpart from Andorra.
