The Government of Spain has welcomed the decision of the EU's European Economic and Social Committee to extend the use of the Spanish co-official languages to the interventions of its members in plenary sessions, in a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

It states that "the Government of Spain has welcomed the decision taken today by the European Economic and Social Committee to extend the use of the Spanish co-official languages to the interventions of its members in plenary sessions".

The communiqué goes on to state "that for almost 20 years, the co-official Spanish languages have been used normally in most European institutions, as naturally as they are used in Spain in both legislative chambers, and in all aspects of public life and administration in the Autonomous Communities with co-official languages, in their governments and autonomous parliaments, provincial councils and town councils".

"The promotion of the use of co-official languages in the EU is a priority for the government, to achieve the objective of bringing our multilingual national identity to Europe and to bring the institutions closer to the citizens".

"With today's decision, our languages can now also be used by members of the European Economic and Social Committee at plenary sessions," the communiqué concludes.
