During the meeting, Alegría thanked the Portuguese government for its willingness and interest in promoting mutual cooperation relations between the two countries in the field of education.

She also expressed her wish to increase the number of cooperation assistants in order to balance the presence in both countries, as well as the number of Spanish language teachers in Portugal.

At the meeting, Alegría and Alexandre discussed the Border Schools and the possibility that participants from both countries could share a common curriculum leading to a double degree. In addition, they discussed the common interest in launching a European university degree, as well as in giving a social and territorial inclusiveness perspective to the next Erasmus+ cycle.

The two ministers also discussed the reactivation of the sports cooperation programme with the aim of drawing up proposals for 2025 and orienting it towards adapted physical activity for people with physical and mental disabilities; gender equality; and prevention and protection against abuse and harassment in sport for children and adolescents.

The two delegations also discussed the joint bid by Spain, Portugal and Morocco for the 2030 football World Cup, which, thanks to the cooperation between the three countries, is progressing well and is expected to be formally confirmed in December. In addition to strengthening ties between Europe and Africa through sport, the creation of a volunteer programme linked to the World Cup has also been discussed.
