Employment linked to the tourism sector continues to add new affiliates and grew by 2.6% in September

This represents an increase of 2.6% over the same month last year. In relation to the labour market of the country as a whole, which grew by 1.6% year-on-year last month, tourism employment accounts for 13.5% of the total number of registered workers.

The change in enrolment was also positive in all branches of tourism in September. In hotels and catering, the increase was 36,780 contributors (13,806 in accommodation services and 22,974 in food and beverage services), and in travel agencies and tour operators it reached 3,135 workers. Other tourism activities also recorded an overall increase of 33,192 employees.

Wage earners increase by 3.1%

In September, the number of employees in the tourism sector increased by 3.1% compared to the same month of 2023, representing 82.4% of the total number of contributors in this sector. By branch of activity, salaried employment increased in tour operators (4.3%) and in hotels and restaurants (2.5%).

Self-employment in tourism, which represents 17.6% of the total number of contributing workers, increased by 0.6 %. A year-on-year increase of 5.7% was observed in travel agencies, while in the hotel and catering sector the number of self-employed people decreased slightly (0.5%).

Employment growth in all the autonomous communities

Employment in hotels and catering and travel agencies and tour operators as a whole increased in all the autonomous communities in September, except in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Both in absolute and relative terms (4.5%), the Canary Islands is the region with the highest growth, followed by Madrid (3%) and Valencia (2.9%).
