Unemployment rises by 3,164 in September, the lowest monthly increase since 2007

The number of unemployed people registered with the State Public Employment Service at the end of September increased by 3,164 (0.12%) with respect to the previous month, the lowest monthly increase since 2007, with the exception of the months affected by Covid.

The total stands at 2,575,285 people, the lowest figure for September since 2007.

In the last 12 months, year-on-year unemployment has fallen by 147,183 people (-5.41%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 22,729 people.

Unemployment by sector

By economic sector, with respect to August, there was a sharp decline in registered unemployment in Construction, with 4,856 fewer unemployed people (-2.4%), in Agriculture, 1,515 people (-1.73%) and Industry, 1,365 people (-0.67%).

Unemployment was up by 4,351 people (0.24%) in Services and by 6,549 among people with No Previous Employment (2.79%).

In year-on-year terms, it is in the Services sector where the greatest reduction in unemployment is recorded, with 97,943 fewer unemployed women and men compared to last year, followed by Agriculture, with almost 14,000 fewer unemployed people, Industry, with 13,430 fewer people and Construction, with 12,484 fewer people.

Unemployment by sex and age

In the month of September, male unemployment increased by 84 people (0.01%) with respect to August to 1,021,547 people, while female unemployment rose by 3,080 people (0.2%), the smallest increase since 2007, bringing the total to 1,553,738 women, its lowest level since 2008.

Compared with September 2023, male unemployment fell by 60,058 people (-5.55%) and female unemployment fell by 87,125 women (-5.31%).

Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age increased in September by 15,027 people (8.48%) compared to August and stood at 192,139 people, the lowest figure for September in the historical series.

Unemployment by autonomous community

In absolute terms, registered unemployment in September 2024 rose in nine autonomous communities, with Andalusia leading the way (7,720 people), followed by Galicia (2,314 people) and Extremadura (1,953 people).

In contrast, it fell in the remaining eight communities, with the largest drops compared to the previous month in the Canary Islands (-4,375 people), Catalonia (-4,060 people) and the Basque Country (-3,367 people).

Contracts

The total number of contracts registered during the month of September was 1,413,683, which represents an increase of 21,478 contracts, 1.54% more than in the same month of 2023.

In September, 619,333 permanent employment contracts were signed. They represent 43.81 per cent of all contracts formalised.

In September, the number of temporary contracts was 794,350, representing 56.19% of the total.

August benefits

The number of beneficiaries at the end of August was 1,845,877, similar to the same month in the previous year.

The coverage of the unemployment protection system during August 2024 was 76.48% and for the first time since 2010, the unemployment benefit coverage rate exceeded 75%.

The total investment stood at 1.9993 billion euros.
