Spain has contributed an investment of more than €228 million to the development of the new European Ariane 6 rocket, which was launched into space last night from the European Spaceport in Guyana on its maiden flight.

Specifically, the more than €228 million correspond to the amount of contracts the European Space Agency (ESA), of which the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities forms part through the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), has committed to Spanish industry to develop Ariane 6.

The Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, has described the launch of this European Space Agency (ESA) rocket into space as a "historic success". "Our country is strengthening its contribution and capabilities in this strategic sector, and Europe guarantees its autonomy in accessing space," he said.

Ariane 6 is the latest model in the European Ariane family of launchers. With a modular and versatile design, the rocket is capable of launching missions to both low-Earth orbit and deep space.

The maiden flight, named VA262, is intended to demonstrate Ariane 6's ability and capability to leave Earth's gravity and operate in space.
