The Government of Spain has insisted on its condemnation of anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred and discrimination, in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation on International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
"Today marks International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau," begins the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
"Spain remembers and pays a heartfelt tribute to the six million Jewish women, men and children who were victims of the Holocaust and to the other four million victims, including 10,000 Spaniards, who suffered the horrors of the concentration and extermination camps."
It goes on to state that "Spain reiterates its condemnation of anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred and discrimination, whether based on racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, age or disability,"
"In the face of Holocaust denial, distortion and trivialisation, which fuel anti-Semitism and have corrosive effects on European collective memory and cohesion, we must foster a tolerant, open, inclusive and egalitarian European society."
"In the face of the resurgence of hate speech across Europe, Spain maintains an active policy in the fight against anti-Semitism. It joined the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in 2008 and endorsed its definition of anti-Semitism in 2020," the statement concluded.
