Tourism employment continues its upward trend with almost 135,000 new Social Security registrations recorded in November

The positive data for the number of Social Security contributors in the tourism sector continued in the first full month of autumn. In November, the number of contributors linked to tourism activities increased in absolute terms by 134,650 people, reaching a total figure of more than 2.72 million workers. This represents an increase of 5.2% over the same month last year. In relation to the labour market of the country as a whole- which grew by 3.2% year-on-year this month- tourism employment accounted for 12.7% of the total number of registered workers.

The change in the number of contributors was also positive in all branches of tourism in November. In Hotels and Restaurants, the increase was 77,745 contributors (24,692 in Accommodation Services and 53,053 in Food and Beverage Services), and in Travel Agencies and Tour Operators it increased by 3,798 workers. Other tourism activities also recorded an overall increase of 53,107 employees.

Wage earners increase by 6.1%

In November, the number of employees in the tourism sector, one of the variables that measure the improvement in the quality of employment, increased by 6.1% with respect to the same month of the previous year to represent 81.6% of the total number of contributors in this sector.

By branch of activity, salaried employment increased in Tour Operators (5.7%) and in Hotels and Restaurants (5.7%), and within the latter, it increased by 8.6% in Accommodation Services and by 4.9% in Food and Beverage Services.

Self-employment in tourism, which represents 18.4% of the total number of contributing workers, increased by 1.5 %. Travel Agencies showed a year-on-year increase of 6.4%, while the increase in Food and Beverage Services was 0.2% and in Accommodation Services 2.8%.

Employment growth is particularly strong in the Balearic Islands and Cantabria

Employment in Hotels and Restaurants and Travel Agencies and Tour Operators as a whole increased in all the autonomous communities in November, including the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

In absolute figures, the largest increase was, as usual, in Andalusia, while compared to the same month in 2023, the largest increases were in the Balearic Islands (9.6%), Cantabria (6.2%) and Andalusia (5.9%).
