Unemployment falls by 46,783 people across all sectors, communities and age groups

The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of June fell by 46,783 people in relation to the previous month (-1.79%).

Registered unemployment thereby stood at 2,561,067, the lowest figure since August 2008 and, on this occasion, with record employment.

With respect to June 2023, unemployment fell by 127,775 people (-4.75%). In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment also fell by 4,145 people.

Unemployment by sector

Registered unemployment falls in all sectors of activity. By economic sector with respect to May, registered unemployment fell in Services by 37,025 people (-1.98%), in Industry by 4,388 people (-2.15%), in Construction by 2,954 people (-1.47%) and in Agriculture by 267 people (-0.29%). Among the previously unemployed, it decreased by 2,149 people (-0.89%).

Unemployment by sex and age

Female unemployment decreased by 24,680 women (-1.57%) bringing the total number of unemployed women to 1,546,204, the lowest figure since 2008.

Male unemployment stood at 1,014,863, a decrease of 22,103 (-2.13%).

In year-on-year terms, the fall in female unemployment exceeds that of male unemployment: female unemployment has fallen by 78,113 women (-4.81%) and male unemployment by 49,662 (-4.67%).

Unemployment among young people under 25 fell in June by 3,939 people (-2.20%) compared with the previous month.

Unemployment by autonomous community

Registered unemployment in May 2024 fell in 17 autonomous communities. The biggest falls in absolute numbers were in Andalusia (-8,746 people), Catalonia (-5,816 people) and the Valencia Region (-4,929 people).

In percentage terms, the largest decreases were in Castilla y León, Galicia and Cantabria.

Contracts

The total number of contracts registered in May was 1,379,963. In June 2024, 576,885 permanent employment contracts were registered, 41.15% of the total.

Unemployment benefits

The number of beneficiaries at the end of May was 1,694,609.

The coverage of the unemployment protection system in May 2024 was 69.43%.

In May 2024, the average monthly expenditure per beneficiary - excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura - was €1,067.4.

The total investment in benefits in May was €1,738.7 million.
