Agri-food and fisheries exports reached a record €70.43 billion in 2023

This figure represents an increase of 3% compared to the 2022 forecast and exceeds the €70 billion mark for the first time.

After assessing the data, Minister Luis Planas indicated that "the agri-food and fisheries balance is recovering after the decline suffered in 2022, and has increased by 10% to €15.47 billion". According to the minister, these figures show that Spain has a dynamic agri-food and fisheries sector, which acts as an engine for the development of the national economy and positions the country as an agri-food power.

This sector has performed better than the economy as a whole, with exports increasing by 3% compared to the final data for 2022. In 2023, exports from the agri-food sector accounted for 18.4% of the Spanish economy's total foreign sales, and imports accounted for 13%.

Imports increased by 1.2 % to just under €54.96 billion.

As for the main export sub-sectors in 2023, in

  • first place was the meat group with €10.3 billion, followed by fruit with just under €9.98 billion, and vegetables with over €8.86 billion, while
  • the vegetables and pulses group showed a 9.9% increase in exports compared to 2022.

In terms of agri-food and fisheries export destinations in 2023:

  • A total of 67.4% went to the EU, an increase of 8.2% over 2022.
  • And 32.6% went to third countries, a decrease of 6.2%.
