This technical working group is framed within the Common Strategy for the Implementation of the Water Framework Directive to coordinate efforts and unify criteria in the application of the main EU water regulation. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Botín Foundation in Madrid.

The main objective of the work of this group is the analysis of tools to improve drought planning and management in Europe. To this end, various lines are being developed, such as the analysis of factors leading to water scarcity, climate adaptation measures and the incorporation of nature-based solutions. It also serves as a mechanism for sharing information on future environmental and socio-economic risks associated with water scarcity and drought in the EU, for exchanging experiences in the application of good practices and for coordination with the activities carried out by other technical groups dedicated to the analysis of ecological flows and economic instruments in hydrological planning, among others.

The meeting addressed the impacts of recent droughts in Europe and the design and application of drought plans, an issue to which the Directorate General for Water of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) contributed its experience, and the advances incorporated in the recent review of the special drought plans of the Spanish inter-community demarcations. Other issues related to climate adaptation measures and water security were also discussed.

The meeting was attended by more than 100 representatives of public water and environmental administrations from EU countries, as well as experts from environmental, social and economic organisations linked to the water sector.
