Pilar Alegría, in a virtual intervention, announced that the next Summit will take place in Valencia from 11-13 May 2022 under the theme 'Moving forwards after the pandemic: governments and teachers' unions working together to leave no one behind'. The event is coming to Spain after the 2020 meeting, which was also due to be held in Valencia, was cancelled due to the pandemic.

"We intend to discuss how we can harness the potential of digital technologies in education; how teachers, school communities and policy makers can work together to design and implement education policies to restore and improve education after the pandemic; and the role of teachers and the entire education community in ensuring a sustainable future," the minister explained in her speech.

The summit, which ends today, co-organised by the United States, focused on excellence and equity in education for all and was attended by the Secretary of State for Education, Alejandro Tiana, the director of the National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF), Julio Albalad, and trade union representatives Paco García (CCOO) and Maribel Loranca (UGT).

Spain will be the host country next year and will organise this important international conference together with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Education International (EI).

The 2022 summit "will provide an unparalleled opportunity for education ministers and trade union leaders to explore, in depth, how the teaching profession can improve educational opportunities for all children and young people during the post-pandemic recovery period," said Pilar Alegria.
