The detainees, both subject to International Arrest Warrants at the request of the Guardia Civil, had been living in territory controlled by DAESH for more than two years, and are both married to Jihadist Moroccans who have taken part in mass murders. Within a context of extreme brutality, living in a voluntary manner under the conditions imposed by the terrorist group DAESH, these women became a potential threat to national security. Furthermore, their links with highly active members of the group made them key elements to be used as "facilitators" for the group in Spain.

In March 2014, A.A.L. left Spain for Syria, where she married a Moroccan combatant called Mohamed Hamdouch, also known as Kokito de Castillejos, "the beheader of Castillejos". During the wedding ceremony, the terrorist presented his wife with an explosives belt. The couple had one son.

In April 2014, F.A.L. and her young son travelled to Syria to meet her husband, the Jihadist, Mourad Kadi. Towards the end of 2015, she was made aware of the possible deaths of the two Jihadist Moroccans.
Following these events, A.A.L. married another Moroccan Jihadist and became pregnant once again.

The Guardia Civil makes a constant effort to control and monitor the activities of foreign terrorist fighters for very extensive periods, aimed at minimising the risk of those individuals with high levels of radicalisation acting in Spain or against Spanish interests abroad.

The operation which resulted in the arrest of the two DAESH activists has been underway for more than two years, during which time the ongoing bilateral cooperation with the Turkish authorities and security forces played a pivotal role. This excellent level of collaboration made possible the arrival of the two detainees in Spain, who will be handed over to Central Investigation Court No.1 of the National High Court. The two young children will be handed over to their relatives.

The exchange of information between the United States, Turkish and Moroccan intelligence services has been fundamental in the development of this operation,

Since the Counter-Terrorism Alert was raised to level 4 on 26 June 2015, the Guardia Civil has strengthened all operational devices and lines of investigation related to the terrorist threat, especially focused on those individuals immersed in a radicalisation process that could lead to them travelling to conflict zones or the carrying out of acts of terrorism in the countries where they reside, which today poses one of the main threats to western countries.

Since 26 June 2015, the date on which the Ministry of Home Affairs raised the Counter-Terrorism Alert Level to level 4 (Spanish acronym: NAA-4), law enforcement agencies have arrested a total of 184 Jihadist terrorists in operations carried out in Spain and abroad, and a total of 229 since the beginning of 2015.

The Ministry of Home Affairs sends out a reminder that, through the initiative STOP RADICALISMOS, citizens can collaborate through a series of channels open to them so that, in a confidential and secure manner, they can notify the State law enforcement agencies of possible cases of radicalisation in their vicinity through the web page www.stop-radicalismos.es, the mobile phone app for citizen security Alertcops and the free hotline 900 822 066.
