Number of theatre and dance companies in Spain increased in 2016, as did number of stages and concert halls

The positive situation in the sector is also reflected by an increased number of stage facilities. The number of stable theatres increased in 13 autonomous regions, from 1,569 in 2015 to 1,630 in 2016. This figure represents 3.5 such facilities per 100,000 inhabitants. In turn, the number of concert halls has increased from 537 in 2015 to 541 in 2016, which represents 1.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Growing number of published musical works
The statistics on music publication in Spain reflect significant growth in the number of musical works published and registered with ISMN, rising from 683 in 2015 to 1,243 in 2016, of which 99.7% were first editions. By musical genre, 72.6% of the works registered published works correspond to instrumental music, followed by light music at 21.5% and vocal music at 4.1%.
The statistical operations relating to performing arts contained in the Inventory of Statistical Operations kept by the State Administration Services are collated by the Music and Dance Documentation Centre and the Theatre Documentation Centre, respectively, both departments being managed under the Spanish National Performing Arts and Music Institute [Spanish acronym: INAEM] of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The Statistics on the Publication of Music in Spain with ISMN, a statistical operation belonging to the National Statistics Plan, are collated by the Music and Dance Documentation Centre of INAEM.
For a correct interpretation of the results, it should be taken into consideration that the information is collected directly. At present, there is no legislation establishing an obligation to register or deregister activity in the aforementioned databases and, as a result, there are no guarantees regarding coverage vis-a-vis the area researched.
The main results regarding 2016 from these statistical operations have been added to CULTURAbase, the cultural statistics database available on the website of the ministerial department.
