Íñigo Méndez de Vigo highlighted that over the last year, piracy has dropped in Spain and the US Department of Trade has underlined the actions carried out by our country in fighting breaches of Internet copyright, although, according to Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, "there is still a long way to go".

"In order to be truly effective, given the cross-border nature of breaches of Internet copyright, we need to take measures at a transnational level. It is not enough to implement measures in just one country", he remarked.

In this regard, taking the opportunity of the presence of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Andrus Ansip, the minister, whose approach was backed by the United Kingdom, Portugal and France, requested information on the raft of measures to combat breaches on digital issues, on which the Culture Commission of the European Union is working, within the framework of the Digital Single Market Strategy, such as the modernisation of the 'observation/enforcement system' on copyright.

Audiovisual works quota

Íñigo Méndez de Vigo also defended Spain's position in the debate on the proposed revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, regarding which he pointed to the need to increase the European audiovisual works quota in the list of audiovisual service providers on demand from 20% to 30%.

"In order to promote European audiovisual creation, the tangible results of which can be seen in relation to traditional television, we must be ambitious in establishing quotas in promoting audiovisual works. This effort will turn out to be worthwhile", pointed out the minister.
