The Spanish delegation was headed up by the Director-General for Energy Policy and Mines, Teresa Baquedano, and the Director-General for Environmental Quality and Evaluation and the Natural Environment, Javier Cachón.
For its part, the Portuguese delegation was represented by the President of the Portuguese Environmental Agency, Nuno Lacasta. The Councillor to the President of the European Commission, Telmo Bartazar, also formed part of the visiting group.
The delegations visited the site of the ITS and were informed of the procedures and the review being carried out to guarantee the safety of the storage facility from an environmental and nuclear security perspective. Representatives of the Nuclear Security Council also attended the visit.
This is the first step in the notification and coordination with the Portuguese authorities following the amicable agreement signed by Spain and Portugal and announced on Tuesday, 21 February. According to this agreement, Spain undertook to report, at all times, on the details of the project to build the ITS at the plant in Caceres within a period of two months.
