This United Nations forum is tasked with monitoring and reviewing the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals adopted at the United Nations Summit held on 25 September 2015.
In his speech, Jesús Gracia reported on the first steps taken by the Government of Spain to implement this agenda through such mechanisms as the coordination of sustainable development policies of all national bodies and institutions; the dissemination of information to all ministerial departments, regional authorities and groups involved in the effects of the 2030 Agenda, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change; the preparation, together with the National Statistics Institute, of the oversight strategy; and the preliminary analysis and diagnosis to assess the best ways to structure the sustainable development goals and the Addis Ababa Agenda.
The State Secretary for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America stressed the need for the coherence of the these policies in order to ensure a comprehensive approach to the agendas, which requires work with all the stakeholders involved: ministerial departments, regional governments, civil society, the private sector, academia, etc. and the use of all resources for their implementation, both financial and non-financial.
The State secretary thanked the United Nations system and its Secretary-General for the work carried out in drafting the first annual report on the progress of the sustainable development goals, which in successive editions should reflect the fight against inequality in all its shapes and forms as the cornerstone of sustainable development, as well as place greater emphasis on human rights.
He also welcomed the global report on sustainable development that contains the recommendations made by the scientific community. Spain considers that science, technology and innovation made available to the international community are key elements for sustainable development.
The State Secretary for International Cooperation and for Ibero-America concluded by reiterating Spain's commitment to sustainable development as a trustworthy nation that is working in a balanced fashion in its different dimensions - social, environmental and economic - both in its domestic policies and its foreign policy. Our country will continue to work for a fairer, more supportive and more sustainable world.
The high-level political forum on sustainable development is due to agree a ministerial declaration at the end of its work in order to provide political leadership to the implementation and review of the 2030 Agenda, supervise progress made on the sustainable development goals and to stimulate coherent policies based on experience and scientific knowledge.
