Member States have thus renewed their commitment to the universal values contained in the charter, which remain just as valid in the international society of the 21st Century, and are also more necessary nowadays than ever before in terms of the foundation of an international order that ensures peaceful coexistence, cooperation and prosperity.
The General Assembly has recalled the full validity of principles such as territorial integrity and the political independence of States and respect for international law, and reasserted its faith in the dignity of the person, equality between men and women, and the commitment to the promotion and protection of the human rights of all people.
The United Nations remains a key international player today in peacekeeping and international security, the defence of human rights and economic and social development.
