The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has issued a communiqué stating that "the Government of Spain categorically rejects the Israeli government's statements favouring the annexation of the West Bank".

The communiqué recalls that "annexation by force is contrary to international law. The International Court of Justice has ruled that the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal and must end as soon as possible".

"The settlements," the Foreign Affairs note continues, "are totally contrary to international law, hinder the two-state solution and are an obstacle to peace."

"These statements are inflammatory and hinder the necessary de-escalation of regional tension," the communiqué concludes.
