The meeting is framed within the round of contacts that the President of the Government has initiated in light of the breakaway process in Catalonia. The first meeting was held with Pedro Sánchez, Leader of the Opposition and General Secretary of the PSOE [Socialist Workers' Party], on 28 October.

On Friday, 30 October, the President of the Government held meetings with Albert Rivera, President of Ciudadanos, and Pablo Iglesias, General Secretary of Podemos. On Monday, 20 November, Mariano Rajoy received the Leader of IU [United Left], Alberto Garzón.
