These arrests form part of the ongoing joint operation between the General Commissariat of Intelligence of National Police and the Moroccan DGST, which resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals in Spain and Morocco, who were carrying out selection, indoctrination and recruitment for the terrorist group DAESH.

The two men arrested in Spain had been in regular contact with others arrested in Spain for their membership of DAESH, as well as with other senior members of this terrorist group located in Syria and Iraq, where they intended to travel to fight.

Furthermore, those arrested had expressed their intention to carry out Jihad and die as martyrs, and to this end they regularly viewed and exchanged audiovisual material on DAESH. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the detainees had also received military instruction and trained in boxing and hand-to-hand combat.

They had also carried out indoctrination work on people in their close environment. This was evidenced by the fact that one of those detained persuaded his partner to follow the example of her brother, who had travelled to Syria, and planned to travel to this conflict zone to also join the ranks of this terrorist group.

The members of this cell carried out selection, indoctrination and recruitment work for the terrorist group DAESH, at both a personal level and online, using social networks to share videos and photographs to incite others to fight in the armed conflict and carry out suicide attacks. One of the two detained in this operation was found to be in Spain illegally at the time of his arrest.

This operation has been carried out jointly with General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance of Morocco (DGST), thus evidencing the importance of international police cooperation as a strategic pillar of the General Commissariat of Intelligence of the National Police in the fight against the main threat as defined within the framework of national security.

The operation, which remains ongoing, was carried out under the instruction of Central Investigation Court Number 5 in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office of the National High Court.

Since 26 June 2015, the date on which the Ministry of Home Affairs raised the Counter-Terrorism Alert Level to level 4 (Spanish acronym: NAA-4), the law enforcement agencies have arrested a total of 162 Jihadist terrorists in operations carried out in Spain and overseas, with a total of 207 arrests since the beginning of 2015.

The Ministry of Home Affairs sends out a reminder that, through the initiative STOP RADICALISMOS, citizens can collaborate through a series of channels open to them so that, in a confidential and secure manner, they can notify the State law enforcement agencies of possible cases of radicalisation in their vicinity through the web page www.stop-radicalismos.es, the mobile phone app for citizens security alerts Alertcops and the free hotline 900 822 066.
