The proposal includes a total of 47 projects that would represent a global investment by Spain of more than 500 million euros, of which a 44% subsidy has been requested.

The overall budget for the whole of Europe under this call for CEF proposals amounts to 840 million euros and will be allocated to projects that increase the efficiency and sustainability of transport, promote the benefits of intermodality, accessibility and interoperability, and guarantee the continuity of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), principally at its cross-border stretches.

Among the most important applications are the following:

  • International projects with particular emphasis on the implementation of systems to improve air traffic management (SESAR - Single European Sky), promoting infrastructures for the supply of alternative energies for transportation (hydrogen, liquefied natural gas and electricity), the re-opening of the Pau-Canfranc railway line and the highway connection of the Spanish A-62 with the Portuguese IP5.
  • Major investments in ERTMS to increase railway transport safety on lines in the northwest of the mainland, as well as in the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors, and on railway rolling stock.
  • Motorway of the Sea projects, and systems to manage and improve the intermodal transportation of goods.
  • Hub integration solutions on the TEN-T corridors and improvements to their urban mobility.
  • Smart systems for highway transportation, including cooperative vehicle- infrastructure systems.

The deadline for the presentation of applications ends on 7 February and it is estimated that subsidies will be given final approval by July.

Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)

The CEF is a European Union instrument to provide financial aid for projects of common interest for Trans-European Transport Networks, telecommunications and energy.

The allocation to develop TEN-T amounts to 22.4 billion euros over the period 2014-2020. The allocation scheduled to the general call for proposals that Spain has access to amounts to 13 billion euros.

Among the calls for proposals for 2014 and 2015, Spain was allocated a total of 915 million euros, of the 9.3 billion distributed around the European Union.

The subsidies for projects presented under the Connecting Europe Facility are awarded on a competitive basis from among the different applications made. Institutions or companies in any of the countries of the European Union can make applications, on either an individual basis or as a joint venture, as well as certain international organisations related to the infrastructure and transport sector.
