The agreement benefits those holders of these specialised qualifications from the Technical Universities of Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, Alfonso X el Sabio University and the University of Cantabria.

Spanish engineers were already able to work in Singapore - some 40 engineers are doing so at present - but until now were unable to sign off projects. Under this agreement, Spanish companies may now comply with the requirements relating to the recruitment of professionals, and consequently, reduce their costs.

The importance of recognising these qualifications is twofold. Firstly, it represents a potential professional upgrade for Spanish engineers who are degree holders in these specialisations and who are going to work and set themselves up professionally in Singapore. And secondly, it benefits the competitiveness of Spanish companies that carry on these activities in Singapore, with major projects put out to international tender in the field of infrastructure (underground lines, high-speed rail link between Singapore and Malaysia, water management and treatment, port installations, the fifth international airport terminal).

Through the Spanish Economic and Commercial Office in Singapore, the State Secretariat for Trade received support from the universities and professional associations affected during these negotiations.
