Spain was represented by the Spanish Ambassador in Accra, María Jesús Alonso, and by the Special Envoy for Maritime Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Acerete.

The summit and the charter represent major political and legal backing for the efforts underway by African countries, at a national and regional level, to tackle the challenges to maritime security, including piracy, crime at sea, illegal trafficking and threats to the environment and maritime resources, also improving, to that end, the mechanisms for governance and cooperation between African countries and the international community.

Spain welcomes the initiative by the Togo authorities for hold this summit and to organise the parallel events that preceded it, with participation from African and international experts, including some Spanish experts, and highlighted the support of the European Union.

These efforts must lead to greater African appropriation and cooperation on the issue of maritime security, and greater development of the local African capabilities in this field, to which Spain and other international players will continue to contribute.
