Recorded unemployment increases by 22,801 in September

The number of unemployed registered with the Public Employment Services rose in September by 22,801 on the previous month. Recorded unemployment rose by an average of 58,835 people in the same month over the last eight years.

Hence, the total number of recorded unemployed now stands at 3,720,297 and remains at one of its lowest levels for the last seven years.

In seasonally-adjusted terms, unemployment fell by 16,906 in the month of September. Unemployment has fallen month-on-month in seasonally-adjusted terms in 40 of the last 41 months.

Over the last 12 months, unemployment has fallen by 373,745. This is the largest year-on-year reduction on record for September. The rate of year-on-year decline in unemployment rose again in September to 9.13%, the fastest rate of decline since the year 1999.

Unemployment among the under-25s rose by 24,188 in September (up 8.49%) on the previous month, while unemployment among the over-25s fell by 1,387 (-0.04%).

Unemployment among the under-25s fell by 50,262 in year-on-year terms, meaning that youth unemployment has fallen by 14% year-on-year (faster than the general average of 9.1%).

Recorded unemployment fell in three autonomous regions: Castile-La Mancha (-9,498), Madrid (-2,032) and La Rioja (-434). In contrast, recorded unemployment increased in 14 autonomous regions, led by Andalusia (8,206), Catalonia (5,641) and Extremadura (4,174).

Recorded unemployment fell in three sectors: it fell in the farming and fisheries sector by 12,507, in construction by 9,984 and in industry by 3,345. In contrast, it rose in the service sector by 39,268 and among first-time job seekers by 9,369.

Permanent employment contracts increase by 11.8%

The number of contracts registered in the month of September amounted to a total of 1,907,000, the highest figure on record for a month of September. This represents an increase of 111,258 (up 6.2%) on the same month last year.

A total of 171,012 permanent employment contracts were recorded in September. This is an increase of 18,084 (11.83%) on September 2015.
