The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation reiterated Spain's firm support for his work to the Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, and its full disposition to collaborate, particularly during the course of the Spanish Presidency of the Security Council in the upcoming month of October. After more than four years of conflict and with a humanitarian crisis not seen since the Second World War, the minister pointed to the need to take steps towards a political solution to the conflict, which takes into account its complex regional dimension.
José Manuel García-Margallo very positively rates the Special Envoy's plan to revitalise the search for a political solution that includes the creation of four work groups to promote inclusive dialogue that will lead to a space for trust between the parties, he said, and thus pave the way for the political negotiation of a second phase on the basis of the 2012 Geneva Communiqué.
This meeting took place some days before the Ministerial Meeting on Syria with ministers from the region and EU ministers to tackle this issue with the United Nations Special Envoy.
