Spain, a member of the UNESCO Executive Board since 2007, was supported by 164 countries in the elections (out of the 186 Member States that took part in the voting).

Spain has been a member of UNESCO since 30 January 1953. In recent years, it has achieved historic levels in its presence and importance, increased both by its institutional involvement and its economic contribution. Spain is one of the 10 main contributors to the ordinary budget of the organisation and a major collaborator in terms of extra-budgetary contributions.

Over the next four years, Spain will continue working in favour of the values advocated by UNESCO and its mandate of working towards consolidating peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information.
