Through constant dedication and silent sacrifice, they represent the best embodiment of the values of solidarity, commitment and devotion, and enable a collective effort to be made by the international community in pursuit of peace.
As a member of the United Nations Security Council, Spain highlights the irreplaceable role played by peacekeeping missions in building a more stable world and in responding to the security needs of the civilian population, above all the most vulnerable among us, living in conflict zones and who deserve a future of peace.
For this reason, Spain welcomes the initiative by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, to set up a High-Level Independent Panel for peacekeeping operations and is convinced that this joint effort will further strengthen such missions as an instrument for peace.
Spain, which has been participating in international peacekeeping missions since 1989, is grateful for the efforts made by all countries that contribute troops and, on this day, wishes to remember all those peacekeepers, especially Spanish peacekeepers, who have given their lives while serving on peacekeeping missions around the world. Their sacrifice is worthy of our most esteemed recognition and sincere tribute.
